Cultural artifacts
This virtual museum was created with two partners as a final project for French Civilization, which I took in the fall of 2022. My partners and I explored how three distinct themes- ancient polytheism, catholicism, and the Religious Wars- affected French religion as a whole. This work was one of the first major projects that I did in French. Through this work, I was able to perform research in French, a skill that I have continued to use through my education. The main challenge presented in this project was finding sources about rather niche topics. The Religious Wars, the topic I was mainly focused on, occurred in the 16th and 17th centuries. Due to this, many of the primary sources about them have been lost to history. Through this virtual museum, I found I was more able to focus my analysis skills. In addition, I was able to work on connecting the specific theme to a broader historical context, which proved helpful in other history classes I have taken since.
This paper was created in the spring of 2023 as a final project for a Medieval Literature class I took while studying abroad. The paper, which was then also converted to an oral presentation, discussed how different societal classes in the Middle Ages affected food consumed and festivity celebrations. The paper also addressed how these topics were related to medieval society as a whole and how they were influenced both by culture at the time and laws. One main challenge with this paper was finding sources about the Medieval period in French. The other main challenge was the conversion of the paper to an oral format, especially while attempting to make the oral presentation interesting while also informative. The paper allowed me to hone in research on a specific topic and improve my analytical skills. It also allowed me to work on creating longer research papers in my target language, specifically with a more analytical and professional linguistic approach.
