This paper, a look at the French medical system and its similarities and differences to the American medical system, was created in the spring of 2023 for the class taken with my internship abroad. I chose the topic because of my interest in medicine, and it ended up being very interesting. Finding the history of the French medical system allowed me to compare the similarities and differences to a medical system I knew well- the American one. The paper also allowed me to dive deeper into research in French. Due to the nature of the topic, I was using almost exclusively French research sources, which allowed me to work on my ability to read and comprehend academic French.
This paper was created for my Contemporary History class, taken abroad in spring of 2023. The paper’s topic was immigration in France between 1945 and 1990, and its religious and cultural effects. This paper was struggling for many reasons, but I believed it helped me grow as a French writer and student. The paper was assigned as the final for a class taken at the university level in French, with French students. This meant that, for every lecture, the professor was speaking as though he was speaking to a group of native French students. This forced me to pay special attention during lectures for the entire 1.5 hours each lecture. The paper was also assigned with a very quick turn around time of less than a week between the assignment and the due date. This meant that, while taking and writing other finals, I was also researching a very niche topic in a complex class. I found myself spending hours researching French history that many French students already knew, giving me a new appreciation for the topic. I also found myself reading large volumes of academic French texts about the topic, aiding in my comprehension of French academic writing. Finally, the paper was an academic paper above all else, which encouraged me to use more professional writing skills than I was used to typically using in my daily speaking or writing. All and all, however, I think that the paper left me a stronger French writer.
